What you thought of The Wreckers

Read a selection of press reviews and audience reactions for The Wreckers.

The curtain has now gone up on our brand new production of Ethel Smyth’s The wreckers.

Directed by Melly Still, this new production is the first major, professional staging of our lifetime, and the first opportunity to hear the opera as Smyth intended, with its original French libretto. Glyndebourne’s music director Robin Ticciati conducts.

Read what the critics and audience had to say about the production.

What the critics are saying

‘Thrilling production of Ethel Smyth’s grossly neglected, pioneering work’

Evening Standard

‘Ethel Smyth’s opera arrives at Glyndebourne in triumph in Melly Still’s production’

The Stage

‘Director Melly Still and conductor Robin Ticciati have done Ethel Smyth’s 1906 opera proud, with dynamic and intense performances from an excellent cast and chorus.’

The Guardian

‘Glyndebourne has sprinkled some magic dust on the piece’

The Times

‘conductor Robin Ticciati and the London Philharmonic deliver the score with such blazing eloquence and conviction’

‘Ticciati believes in every phrase, and Glyndebourne has assembled a magnificent cast and the usual chorus of young future stars’

Audience Member

‘What a production! All I can say is if you haven’t got a ticket then get one. This is lavish and atmospheric and the singing and orchestra are superb!’
