We are seeking a proactive and detail-oriented Payroll Assistant to join our small but dynamic Payroll Team at Glyndebourne. This role is integral to the efficient and accurate operation of our weekly and monthly payrolls.
Reporting to the Payroll Manager and working closely alongside two Senior Payroll Officers, you will provide essential support in the preparation, processing, and administration of our payroll activities.
As part of this role you will be responsible for assisting in the use and development of the Iris Cascade Payroll system, which is currently being implemented across the organisation. As such, the Payroll Assistant will play a part in both the system rollout and in helping ensure a smooth transition for all employees.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
The Payroll Assistant will support the weekly payroll operations for both Glyndebourne Productions and Glyndebourne Enterprises, primarily using Iris Cascade software. The role includes a wide range of payroll and administrative duties as outlined below:
- Inputting employee information and transferring new starters from the recruitment system
- Checking and calculating timesheets and holiday pay
- Inputting accurate payroll data into the payroll system
- Submitting payroll files to BACS for payment
- Submitting RTI (Real Time Information) to HMRC
- Processing auto-enrolment and uploading pension contributions to The People’s Pension
- Handling employee payment queries promptly and professionally
- Processing leavers, including calculating final pay and issuing P45s
- Maintaining payroll data including pay increases and some HR information
- Staying informed on union agreements and current payroll legislation
- Preparing routine payroll correspondence and responding to internal/external payroll-related queries
- Providing absence cover for the Payroll Manager and Senior Payroll Officers, including assistance with monthly payrolls
- Supporting the preparation of payroll costing journals and uploading general ledger files to the finance system
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Some prior experience in a payroll environment, ideally involving regular processing cycles
- Ability to work extremely accurately under pressure, meeting tight deadlines
- Good interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally when dealing with colleagues and resolving payroll queries
- Strong computer literacy, including experience with Google Workspace (Google Docs, Sheets, etc.), Microsoft Excel, and Word
- Experience with integrated payroll/HR software such Iris Cascade
- A high degree of confidentiality is essential, particularly in respect of contracts and payments.
- Experience handling complex employment arrangements, such as:
- Union agreements
- Variable working hours
- Manual and digital timesheets
- An understanding of payroll-related legislation and auto-enrolment processes
Hours of Work
The contractual hours of work are 35 per week, 09:00 – 17:00 Monday – Friday, with an hour for lunch.
Salary and Benefits
We can offer a salary of up to £28,000 per annum dependent on experience.
We offer 33 days / 6.6 weeks holiday inclusive of bank holidays, per annum, pro rata.
