The curtain came down on Annabel Arden’s production of Il barbiere di Siviglia for the last time at Festival 2016 on Sunday 17 July.

The production now goes to the Proms on Monday 25 July. The performance will be available to enjoy on BBC Radio 3.

The eighth performance of the run of 16 was also streamed live in cinemas across the UK and online to viewers around the world, thanks to support through our New Generation Programme.

Il barbiere di Siviglia will be back for Tour 2017, but until then we take a look at how Rossini’s famous opera was received in its first Glyndebourne Festival outing since 1982.

In the press

★★★★★ ‘Enrique Mazzola […] teases out the wit in the score with barbed delicacy [and] Danielle de Niese’s powerfully sung Rosina is a caged and dangerous wild animal.’
—Michael Church, Independent

★★★★ ‘The musical fireworks from the London Philharmonic Orchestra under the ebullient Enrique Mazzola brings out the heady fizz of Rossini’s score.’
—Clare Colvin, Sunday Express

★★★★ ‘The evening’s star, though, is the young German baritone Björn Bürger, whose bright and brilliant tone is matched by equivalent stage personality to position his Figaro, quite properly, at the epicentre of the whirlwind action.’
—George Hall, the Stage

★★★★ ‘Danielle de Niese is a Rosina of irrepressible energy and sparkly’
—Richard Fairman, the Financial Times

★★★ ‘…the expert Enrique Mazzola is conducting and, with the help of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the score bubbles along on a Puckish current of merry mischief.’
—Rupert Christiansen, the Daily Telegraph

★★★ ‘Bürger rightly dominates with singing of great bravado and warmth’
—Tim Ashley, the Guardian
