Glyndebourne retains highest possible rating for environmental performance for second year running

Glyndebourne has retained the 3* Industry Green rating it was awarded last year by independent environmental organisation Julie’s Bicycle in recognition of the organisation’s on-going commitment to addressing its environmental impact. This rating is currently held by just three other arts venues and five outdoor festivals.

News of Glyndebourne’s success comes shortly after the opera house revealed that in the first two years of operation, its on-site wind turbine has provided 95% of the organisation’s electricity requirements; surpassing the 90% target originally set.

Gus Christie, Executive Chairman of Glyndebourne Productions, said: “Maintaining our 3* Industry Green rating caps off a very successful year for Glyndebourne in our efforts to reduce our environmental footprint. The wind turbine is delivering on expectations and across the company a concerted effort is being made to reduce our use of electricity and gas. The result of those efforts has been a reduction in energy use per performance during 2013 despite an increase in the number of performance in the year. We are continually examining ways in which we can make further improvements both through changes to our own working systems and through partnerships with likeminded businesses.”

Among the outcomes which have contributed to Glyndebourne’s success in retaining its top rating are:

  • A reduction in energy use per performance thanks to the Glyndebourne wind turbine and a concerted effort to reduce the use of electricity and gas through the installation of LED bulbs, light sensors and high-efficiency gas-fired condensing boilers.
  • An improved understanding of waste disposal in the local area which means that Glyndebourne can now genuinely claim nil to landfill.
  • The inclusion of a Green Rider as a standard requirement in Glyndebourne’s purchasing policy.

Industry Green is an independent certification of environmental sustainability and was set up in partnership with the Environmental Change Institute at Oxford University. Industry Green is administered by Julie’s Bicycle who work to make environmental sustainability intrinsic to the business, art and ethics of creative industries.
