The Glyndebourne label has released a live recording of Love and Other Demons, the fifth opera by composer Peter Eötvös and a co-commission by Glyndebourne and the BBC. The opera is based on the novel Of Love and Other Demons by Columbian author Gabriel García Márquez
Peter Eötvös is among the most commissioned creators of new operas in Europe. His latest new work, Paradise Reloaded, has its world premiere at Neue Oper Wien in Austria in October 2013.
Love and Other Demons received its world premiere at the 2008 Glyndebourne Festival before being staged by Lithuanian National Opera later that year and enjoyed a sold-out production in Chemnitz in Germany in 2009. Explicitly conceived for Glyndebourne, the opera was created through close collaboration between the composer, Peter Eötvös, director, Silviu Purcarete and conductor, Vladimir Jurowski, who led the London Philharmonic Orchestra in what the Independent described as a’beautifully realised’performance.
Several of the featured artists were critically acclaimed for their performances including the then little-known Australian soprano Allison Bell, who has gone on to establish a successful international concert career performing with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and the Britten Sinfonia amongst many others.
Having created the role of Sierva Maria in Love and Other Demons, she repeated the role at the Lithuanian National Opera and most recently at the Opéra National du Rhin. She is regularly chosen by Peter Eötvös to perform as a vocal soloist in performances of his work and in 2011 appeared on the Ensemble Linea Play Eötvös CD which won a Hungarian FONOGRAM award and the Orphée d’Or at the Académie Internationale du Disque Lyrique in Paris.
In the role of Father Cayetano Delaura American baritone Nathan Gunn also made his mark. Much in-demand on both sides of the Atlantic, he has performed at many of the great opera houses including the Royal Opera House, Lyric Opera Chicago, Bayerische Staatsoper and the Metropolitan Opera. He also has an established recording career and sang the title role on a GRAMMY award-winning recording of Billy Budd with Daniel Harding and the London Symphony Orchestra.
Love and Other Demons is the third of four Glyndebourne label releases in 2013 conducted by Vladimir Jurowski to mark the conductor’s final year as Music Director of Glyndebourne.
The recording will be available to buy on CD from the Glyndebourne shop and other good music retailers from 30 September 2013. It is available for download from the Glyndebourne iTunes store – www.itunes.com/glyndebourne
