The Glyndebourne label is releasing a live recording of its 2009 production of Tristan und Isolde, the first of two Wagner releases in 2013 to mark the composer’s bicentenary.
The production, which was directed by Nikolaus Lehnhoff, debuted at the Glyndebourne Festival in 2003 and was the first Wagner opera ever to be staged at Glyndebourne. John Christie, Glyndebourne’s founder, had always dreamed of staging Wagner and his dream was finally fulfilled with this acclaimed production which was revived in 2007 and 2009.
In this 2009 recording, the title roles are taken by Torsten Kerl and Anja Kampe who made their British stage debuts as Florestan and Leonore in Glyndebourne’s 2006 production of Fidelio. Sarah Connolly, who is currently performing at Glyndebourne Festival 2013 in a new production of Rameau’s Hippolyte et Aricie, also drew plaudits for her portrayal of Brangäne.
The recording is conducted by Glyndebourne’s Music Director, Vladimir Jurowski who was conducting the opera for the first time. All four Glyndebourne label releases for 2013 are conducted by Vladimir Jurowksi to mark his final year as Music Director.
‘…he (Jurowski) built up the great ending to Act I shatteringly and shaped the Act II love duet as a beautiful arc. He was helped by searingly intense playing from the London Philharmonic’
The Sunday Telegraph, August 2009
‘…Anja Kampe’s Isolde did that rare thing of channelling the energy of her anger and pride into rapture… her ardour is unequivocally thrilling and touching by turns.’
The Independent, August 2009
‘The attention to detail and scrupulous balance that Jurowski and his orchestra invariably achieve these days were expected but, by the final act, he had gone further, igniting a blistering intensity that threatened to send glyndebourne’s elegant wooden interior up in flames. With music-making such as this coming out of the pit, nothing is beyond Glyndebourne at the moment.’
Financial Times, August 2009
Later this year Glyndebourne will release a live recording of its first ever production of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg from the 2011 Glyndebourne Festival starring Gerald Finley.
The recording is available to buy now from the Glyndebourne shop.
The Glyndebourne label launched in 2008 and is the only independent record label to be run by a UK opera house. Through the label, Glyndebourne makes use of modern technology to delve in to its incredible musical archive and allow many of the most seminal opera performances of the last fifty years to be enjoyed again and again.
