Glyndebourne launches its own independent CD label

Glyndebourne is proud to announce the launch of its own independent CD label. The Glyndebourne Label will launch to coincide with the 2008 Festival and the recordings will come from Glyndebourne’s current and archive repertoire. The first releases will be the 2006 Festival production of Prokofiev’s Betrothal in a Monastery conducted by Vladimir Jurowski and the 1962 production of Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro conducted by Silvio Varviso.

The new CD label will be the first in-house label from a UK opera company to feature current productions as well as archive recordings and reflects Glyndebourne’s desire to further extend its work beyond the opera house. The pairing of archive productions with current repertoire will continue with a further two productions to be released on CD in the autumn. Thereafter four CDs will be released each year in the Spring and Autumn. The Glyndebourne CD Label will be distributed in the UK by Select Distribution and in other territories by Codaex.

The CDs released will come from Glyndebourne’s recorded repertoire which spans the years between 1960 and the present day, encompassing Glyndebourne’s early Mozart traditions as well as its exploration of lesser known works. These recordings were made under the highest technical standards and reflect the excellence which Glyndebourne always aspires to. Recorded by John Barnes, with the blessing of the Christie family, this unique collection of performance recordings will now become available on CD for the first time.

The CD label is a part of Glyndebourne’s continued investment in digital media and follows on from a number of successful initiatives to secure the rights to past and present productions. Reaching out to new audiences and offering them fresh contact with the operatic art form is a priority for Glyndebourne. Six years ago, Glyndebourne was the first opera house in the UK to self-produce its own audio-visual material (in partnership with Opus Arte and the BBC). This Autumn Glyndebourne was the first UK opera house to present world-class opera at cinemas throughout the country. The ground-breaking work done by Glyndebourne in the area of artists’rights now enables Glyndebourne to launch this exciting new CD label.
