Glyndebourne Festival 2016 opens with Gerald Finley returning to his critically acclaimed role as Hans Sachs in David McVicar’s production of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, a comedy about art and its place in society.

In this short film Gerald explains why he sees the role of Hans Sachs as being a gift for a singer – a rich mine of artistic possibilities. Gerald reflects on what he thinks audiences want to see from characters on stage, as well as what he believes makes opera so wonderful as an artform.

Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg returns to the Glyndebourne Festival for the first time since 2011. David McVicar’s production is a true landmark in Glyndebourne’s history, fulfilling founder John Christie’s dream to stage the opera here.
