Ben Glassberg appointed Principal Conductor of the Glyndebourne Tour

Ben Glassberg has been appointed Principal Conductor of the Glyndebourne Tour, it has been announced.

The Glyndebourne Tour Orchestra comprises a diverse mix of talented and committed freelance players who assemble each year to perform in three productions for the annual Glyndebourne Tour.

In the role of Principal Conductor, Glassberg will conduct one production on each Glyndebourne Tour for the next three years. The first will be Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore for Glyndebourne Tour 2019. At the end of his term a new Principal Conductor will be appointed.

Steven Naylor, Director of Artistic Administration, said: ‘A major aim of the Glyndebourne Tour is to champion new talent. The role of Principal Conductor of the Glyndebourne Tour has been created to offer another vehicle for supporting exceptionally talented musicians, in this case conductors. From his previous work for Glyndebourne, it is clear that Ben is a rising star and we are delighted to be developing our relationship with him through this appointment.’

Among the top level conductors whose careers were advanced through performances with the Glyndebourne Tour are Ivor Bolton, Louis Langrée, Edward Gardner, Robin Ticciati and Jakub Hrůša.

Conductor Ben Glassberg said: ‘I’m incredibly excited to be continuing my relationship with Glyndebourne as Principal Conductor of Glyndebourne Tour. My first professional work as an assistant was at Glyndebourne, as well as many memorable and joyous moments in my career so far. I look forward greatly to working with the outstanding orchestra and chorus over the next few years, after having a terrific experience with them both this year.’

Ben Glassberg is conducted La traviata: Behind the Curtain for Glyndebourne Tour 2018. His previous appearances for Glyndebourne include one performance of La clemenza di Tito and two performances of Madama Butterfly at the Glyndebourne Festivals 2017 and 2018. This season he has conducted performances of Die Zauberflöte at La Monnaie, and forthcoming debuts include with the Detroit Symphony and St Petersburg Symphony Orchestras.

Autumn 2018 marks 50 years of the Glyndebourne Tour.
