Free Youth Opera workshops

Glyndebourne Youth Opera provides local young people with engaging opera workshops open to all.

If you are aged between 9 and 19 and love singing, drama, movement and performance you are invited to join us for fun, creative workshops.

Free workshops this May

We are pleased to announce three days of free workshops for young people aged 9-19 at Glyndebourne this May half term.

Who are they for?

These workshops are for young people in Sussex who are interested in singing and performing. The workshops are open to new and existing members of Glyndebourne Youth Opera and are a fantastic opportunity to get involved.

What are we doing?

In these fun, creative workshops we will explore singing and movement to develop your opera skills, audition tips and working as an ensemble – alongside so much more.

Friday 31 May – Audition Technique: Learn about bringing your authentic self to an audition, discover tips and tricks, practice working with a pianist and build your confidence. The perfect preparation for our upcoming auditions. Creative Team: Arlene Rolph, Karen Carghill and Joe Cummings.

Saturday 1 June – Being Bold: Learn how to harness your performance energy and be bold, as well as not being afraid to make mistakes. High energy and fun, bring along bags of enthusiasm for this one! Creative Team: Arlene Rolph, Travis Baker and Joe Cummings.

Sunday 2 June – Movement and Ensemble: Explore working as part of an ensemble and bringing a piece of music to life; this workshop will include stage work, movement and singing. Creative Team: Arlene Rolph, Mike Ashcroft and Joe Cummings.

When and where?

The workshops will take place at Glyndebourne on Friday 31 May – Sunday 2 June. Each day there will be a morning session for ages 9-13 (10.00pm – 1.00pm) and an afternoon session for ages 14-19 (2.00pm – 5.00pm).

Your chance to perform on the Glyndebourne stage

The workshops above could be your first step on a journey to Glyndebourne’s main stage! In June we will be holding auditions for young people to be part of some upcoming performances at Glyndebourne, please see details below.

Ages 9-13 – Audition to be part of our Christmas Concerts taking place in December 2024.

Ages 14-19 – Audition to be part of a brand new community opera, premiering in 2025.

Details of the auditions will be announced via email to the Glyndebourne Youth Opera mailing list – you must be an active member to be eligible to audition, so make sure you have attended at least one workshop (see above) before signing up.

ELIGIBILITY

These opportunities are open to all young people aged 9 to 19 living within 25 miles of Glyndebourne. You can also become a Glyndebourne Youth Opera member, membership is free and you can sign up here.

We promote equality, diversity and inclusion and actively encourage applications from those whose backgrounds are currently underrepresented in the world of opera.

Spaces will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, with priority given to Glyndebourne Youth Opera members who have never attended a workshop before.
