Free Youth Opera workshops

Glyndebourne Youth Opera provides local young people with engaging opera workshops open to all.

If you are aged between 9 and 19 and love singing, drama, movement and performance join us for fun, creative workshops.

Summer holiday workshops

Join us on Friday 25 July, Wednesday 6 August and Thursday 7 August for free workshops at Glyndebourne. These workshops are open to both new and existing members of GYO and are a fantastic opportunity to get involved.

The World of Hansel and Gretel

Friday 25 July, 9.30am-3.30pm
GYO1 (age 9-13 yrs)
Lucy Bradley and Joe Cummings will lead a workshop exploring Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel through song, movement and improvisation. Participants will learn elements of the opera and explore the story and characters through warm up games and activities

Mimì and Rodolfo

Wednesday 6 August, 9.00am-3.00pm
GYO2 (age 14-19 yrs)
Led by Lucy Bradley and Howard Moody, participants will examine Rodolfo and Mimi’s relationship and re-imagine the characters from their own perspective, learn Puccini’s timeless material and write their own musical interpretation of the story and characters.

la Bohème character discovery

Thursday 7 August, 10.00am-1.00pm & 2.00pm-5.00pm
GYO1 (age 9-13 yrs) 
Lucy Bradley and Howard Moody will lead a workshop on Puccini’s iconic tale of friendship, love and loss. Participants will unpick the character of Mimi, learn musical motifs, bring to life the iconic Act 2 café scene and write their own musical responses to the story and characters of La bohème.

who are they for?

These workshops are for young people aged 9-19 years old in Sussex who are interested in singing and performing. You don’t need to have any prior singing experience to join in, just be curious to find out more about music, movement and performing! Spaces will be allocated through a randomised ticket ballot, with priority given to GYO members who have never attended a workshop before.

What does it cost?

All sessions are FREE.

The deadline for applications is Thursday 17 July, 5.00pm. Places will be allocated on Friday 18 July, any further spaces will be allocated on a rolling basis after this date.

There will be a waiting list for any oversubscribed sessions.
