Among the Lights

An online exhibition of new works by Gabriel Langlands

An online exhibition of new works by Gabriel Langlands for Art at Glyndebourne, inspired by south-east England.

Among the Lights: New works by Gabriel Langlands

Gabriel Langlands paints directly from the landscapes that he knows: the woods, hills and agricultural expanses of south-east England, the mountains and waterways of the Scottish coast. These are sites that are at once rooted and familiar, yet perpetually in motion. Langlands’ processes mirror his subjects, with fleeting shifts in the season, light and weather rendered fluidly, somewhere between observation and abstraction. Broad brushstrokes sweep over bold simplified forms, playfully adjusting our sense of perspective. Langlands knows how to compress and expand space. Vast fields become dense blocks of colour, whilst a scumbled edge marks the shortening shadows of approaching Spring.

It’s impossible to see these works and not think about the legacies of twentieth-century British landscape painting – of Paul Nash and Ivon Hitchens – even the later landscape works of Edward Burra, with their intricate delineation of natural forms and sense of boundless nature. Rooted in a sustained attentiveness to place, Langland’ paintings remind us that landscape is always provisional – not a fixed view to be distilled once, but an ongoing encounter, unfolding over time.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Gabriel Langlands (b.1973) is a self-taught painter who lives and works in Hampshire. After spending several seasons working in fish-stations in Arctic Norway, he trained as a traditional timber framer before taking up painting full time. His first public exhibition of work was in Glyndebourne’s annual group exhibition Fair Ground in 2023. He has since shown work at Moncrieff-Bray Gallery, West Sussex (2024); Nicholas Lees Studio (2024); Brick Lane Gallery, London (2025); The Table Gallery, Hay-on-Wye (2025); and at Apperley Arts, London (2026). He is a Fellow of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Among the Lights is Langland’ first solo exhibition.
