Lighting Supervisor

We are currently recruiting for a Lighting Supervisor to join our Lighting team on a fixed-term contract for the 2023 Festival

We are currently recruiting for a Lighting Supervisor to join our Lighting team on a fixed-term contract for this year’s Festival.

Your primary role is to provide technical and managerial support to the Head of Lighting & A/V in order to ensure the provision of high quality lighting services to Glyndebourne, both at Glyndebourne and any other venue where the Company may perform.  The Lighting Supervisor will also be expected to relight existing productions and to provide  creative and artistic input when required; as well as occasional lighting design for smaller projects.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Support the Head of Lighting & A/V in the day to day activities of the Lighting and A/V Department
  • Identify production and project requirements to meet the needs of creative and technical teams
  • Develop and action production and project requirements collaboratively with colleagues and effectively communicate this to the appropriate individuals/ teams 
  • Manage departmental, production and project resources (people and equipment) within predefined budget and criteria, as agreed with line manager and originating department.
  • Ensure show related working protocols and H&S compliance are carried out as required
  • Act as a team leader, giving technical advice and instruction to lighting staff as necessary, to help develop skills and suggest any relevant training
  • Share responsibility for departmental staffing (welfare, performance, standards and general discipline) and individual personal and professional development
  • Support the Head of Lighting & A/V in maintaining an efficient, skilled, professional department.
  • Attend production meetings and other relevant meetings. The postholder will liaise with visiting lighting designers and other members of the creative teams. They will hold and participate in working meetings with other technical departments to ensure the smooth running of all stage operations.
  • Produce rig plans using Glyndebourne’s agreed software package (eg Vectorworks  etc)
  • supervise and recreate lighting designs for Glyndebourne productions which are produced by Glyndebourne, both in the UK and worldwide
  • provide lighting design for smaller Glyndebourne productions such as concerts, pre-show talks, education workshops etc
  • plan and organise the preparation, operation, storage, and running repairs for all equipment needed for all assigned productions.
  • create and maintain accurate records (lighting plan/plots/cue sheets/notes/other) of all lighting requirements for each production 

It is expected that in the absence of the Head of Lighting & A/V, the duty Supervisor may be requested to deputise. 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Minimum Criteria
  • Lighting experience at a supervisory level; experience of leading by example and guiding and motivating others
  • Lighting design experience or an established record of recreating lighting designs is essential
  • A professional approach to the job, a positive and flexible attitude and the ability to behave diplomatically in a highly pressurised environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of Google packages, Vectorworks and other lighting specific software
  • Ability to prioritise workload effectively in consultation with the Head of Lighting & A/V and to show initiative and decisiveness
  • Able to adapt to rapidly changing needs and priorities, without losing sight of the overall aims
  • Excellent interpersonal skills showing a positive, supportive and professional attitude towards both colleagues and visiting creative teams.
  • An overall understanding of repertoire theatre
  • Familiarity with Eos family of consoles, data networking and a working knowledge of moving lights
  • IPAF / Work at Height training

Hours of work, Salary and Benefits

We can offer a salary of between £40 – 47,000 per annum pro rata dependent on skills experience.

The contractual hours of work are on average 48 per week however you may be required to work additional hours to meet the demands of the role including evenings & weekends.

We offer 5.6 weeks holiday per year.
