Assistant Cutter - Men’s Tailoring Department

Our Costume department has recently moved into state of the art workrooms in our brand new production hub.

We have a vacancy for an Assistant Cutter to join our Men’s Tailoring team.

This key role is a unique opportunity to bring your considerable Technical and Creative skills to our team, collaborating with international creative teams to continue your career in our world class repertoire environment.

In this role you will realise designs, draft patterns, cut period and modern garments and also fit, alter and refurbish existing costumes for revivals.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • To measure and fit cast for revivals.
  • To mark alterations and handover into workroom.
  • To contribute to the development of tailoring and costume skills for less experienced team members.
  • To work with Senior Cutter to assess costume availability for revivals.
  • To assist Senior Cutter in organising and delegating work to the team.
  • To produce patterns and grade toiles as specified.
  • To communicate regularly with staff to ensure deadlines are met.
  • To make, alter and refurbish costumes.
  • To attend rehearsals as necessary, supporting artists and running wardrobe, note and action costume alterations.
  • To maintain the safe working practices.
  • To carry out other duties as required by the Head of Costume.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Education and Training
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Costume/Fashion, specialising in tailoring/ cutting for men.
  • Significant experience tailoring in a recognised production workroom.
  • Proven ability to cut and construct costumes to a consistently high standard.
  • Proven ability in altering existing costumes to a high standard.
  • Experience of instructing less experienced staff.
Knowledge and Special Skills
  • Knowledge of period costume.
  • Excellent knowledge of bespoke tailoring.
  • Ability to produce authentic cut in the interpretation of any design.
  • Advanced and accurate hand and machine sewing skills.
  • An understanding of workroom structures, team building and staff supervision.
  • Knowledge of sewing machine maintenance.

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills,
  • Able and willing to instruct and support less experienced staff in work room procedures.
  • Able to work under pressure and adapt to the needs of working extended hours in a festival environment.
  • Proactive, flexible attitude to meet deadlines and last minute changes.
  • Able and willing to improve your career by taking on more responsibility.

Hours of Work

The contractual hours of work are 39 per week, 09.00-18.00 Monday-Thursday and 09.00-17.00 on Friday with an hour for lunch, however, you may be required to work additional hours to meet the demands of the role in the build-up to the Festival and Tour.

Rates of Pay and Benefits

This is an hourly paid position and the current rates are £13.44 per hour /£524.16 per week.

We offer 6.8 weeks holiday pa pro rata inclusive of bank holidays.

We have excellent on site catering facilities, can offer a beautiful working environment, the opportunity to see world class opera and for those without their own transport we have a free minibus service to and from Lewes railway station and a season ticket loan scheme.
