Support The Wreckers

Bring this powerful, claustrophobic tragedy to Glyndebourne for the very first time.

YOU CAN HELP BRING THIS IMPORTANT WORK TO THE FESTIVAL FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 2022 BY JOINING THE WRECKERS SYNDICATE OR CIRCLE FROM £5,000.

The Wreckers is a piece many opera lovers know by name, but one that few have heard, let alone seen. This powerful, psychological drama of ‘wrecking, religion and love’ set on the Cornish coast was the pinnacle of Dame Ethel Smyth’s career – a work Sir Thomas Beecham praised as a ‘masterpiece’.

Melly Still directs a major new staging of Dame Ethel’s opera. Glyndebourne’s production will be the first-ever staging of the original French-language version, and the first professional, major-house staging in our lifetime. This will also be the first production performed in the Glyndebourne Festival composed by a woman. Conducted by Glyndebourne’s music director, Robin Ticciati, the exhilarating score surges with stormy urgency.
