Children’s Chorus: La damnation de Faust

Perform in the Children’s Chorus in La damnation de Faust

We are delighted to announce that we are auditioning young singers in GYO1 (ages 9 – 13) for the off-stage children’s chorus in the brand new Glyndebourne production of La damnation de Faust, staged in the 2019 Festival, directed by Richard Jones and conducted by Glyndebourne’s Music Director Robin Ticciati.

If you are selected at audition you will rehearse at Glyndebourne with the full creative team and will sing in French as part of the off-stage children’s chorus, which appears at the very end of the opera. This is an exciting opportunity for GYO members to sing in a Glyndebourne Festival production and will offer performers a unique singing experience and the chance to be part of a professional creative process.

Applications for audition have now closed.

Auditions

Prior to the audition we will be running a two-day pre-audition preparatory session at Glyndebourne. The preparatory session will be led by Glyndebourne’s Vocal Talent Consultant Mary King joined by French language coach Florence Daguerre de Hureaux. The preparatory session is an essential part of the process as you will audition using the material taught to you by Mary and Florence during the session. You will not need to prepare anything before this, although if you do already speak French this will be advantageous.

This session is provided free of charge and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. You must attend the preparatory session in order to audition.

Auditions will be held in front of Steven Naylor, Director of Artistic Administration at Glyndebourne. You will audition in small groups but may be asked to sing on your own at various points. Although it is normal to be nervous at audition, we work very hard to create a friendly and positive environment and people usually enjoy the process!

Dates

You must be able to attend both days of the pre-audition session as well as the audition itself:

Pre-Audition Session – Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 January 10.00am – 3.00pm
Audition – Monday 14 January 5.30pm – 7.00pm

If you are selected at audition you will need to be available for all of the performance dates listed on the ‘Dates and times’ tab on this page. In addition you will need to be available for certain production rehearsals and also vocal and language coaching with Mary and Florence in the run up to opening night. A detailed schedule will be available on Saturday 12 January.

You may be required to miss some school in order to take part in rehearsals and performances. Glyndebourne will be applying for a child performance license on your behalf, but your Headteacher will need to give permission for you to be absent from school.

Eligibility

To be eligible for an audition you will need to be aged between 9 and 13 on Monday 14 January, and live within 25 miles of Glyndebourne.
