Dido & Aeneas (1998)
After the success of 1997’s production of Misper, Glyndebourne established its very own youth company (now known as Glyndebourne Youth Opera). Dido & Aeneas was one of their first productions, which took Purcell’s timeless opera and set it in the 1990s. The production was performed at Ringmer Community College.
Dido, international recording star and queen of style, is unable to speak of the cause to her distress. Her mood changes when Belinda, best friend and personal assistant, mentions Aeneas, the guest of honour at that evening’s social gathering. The two meet; their love for one another is obvious to the other guests.
Whilst Dido and Aeneas’ future seems secure, an unscrupulous tabloid editor and his paparazzi reporters plot to destroy the celebrity coupling.
After an out of town concert performance, Dido and Aeneas are able to steal a few moments together. However, the press are still at work, forcing Dido and her entourage back to town and persuading Aeneas to leave the country on urgent overseas business. At the harbour the paparazzi, masquerading as seamen, help prepare Aeneas for his journey.
Shocked by Aeneas’ willingness to leave her, Dido tells him to go. Despite brief protestations he agrees. She is left alone.
