Glyndebourne will give music lovers the gift of free opera this Christmas in partnership with the Telegraph Media Group.
From 3pm Saturday 27 December until midnight Sunday 4 January, Glyndebourne’s 2008 production of Hänsel und Gretel will be available to stream in full and on demand via the Telegraph website.
In this production of Engelbert Humperdinck’s much-loved opera, French director, Laurent Pelly, presents a ghoulishly vivid take on the classic story showing the two children driven by hunger into the clutches of a terrifying witch, who presides over an apparently free-for-all supermarket, shelves groaning with high-fat, high-sugar, highly coloured irresistible treats.
When it premiered in 2008, the Telegraph wrote that, ‘…Laurent Pelly’s poetic, witty and imaginative modernising of Hänsel und Gretel gives fresh vitality to Humperdinck’s adorable masterpiece.’ See it yourself from 27 December.
Laurent Pelly returns to Glyndebourne in 2015 to oversee a revival of his 2012 productions of L’heure espagnole and L’enfant et les sortileges.
