Frequently Asked Questions

How can I find out about returns?

For up-to-date notification via email you can join our returns club for free. During the Festival we will then send you notification of current availability via email.

What train do I catch and how do I travel to Glyndebourne from  Lewes via public transport?

Refer to the Performance Schedule for the time of the recommended train from London Victoria to Lewes before the performance in question. This train will be met at Lewes Station by the Glyndebourne chartered bus. Departure times vary and can be provided. The return fare is £6.00 payable to the driver on boarding. Patrons arriving by train from other stations than Victoria should time their journey to be at Lewes before the charter bus leaves for Glyndebourne.

Later trains from Victoria might allow enough time to travel to the opera house but patrons must arrange their own transport from Lewes Station, where a taxi rank is located. The charter bus for Glyndebourne on Tour performances leaves Lewes Station one hour before the start of scheduled performances.

When does the bus leave Glyndebourne?

Refer to the Performance Schedule for departure times after 2008 Festival performances.

What is the dress code?

Evening dress is customary for the Festival but not compulsory. The majority of gentleman patrons wear black tie. For Glyndebourne on Tour performances the dress code is smart casual.

What happens if it rains?

A marquee is available near the car park for picnics. The terraces on all levels of the opera house also provide cover. There are a limited number of picnic tables available on a first come first served basis, on the Circle and Upper Circle levels (see above) but we recommend that patrons bring  their own picnic tables & chairs, if possible.

See Map of Glyndebourne for locations.

How do I book a restaurant?

Telephone Leith’s catering on 01273 812510 for more information or place an order online.

Is there a cloakroom & where is it?

Yes, the cloakroom is at stalls level. The cloakroom is open from two hours before the performance.

Where is the Ebert Room/Jerwood Studio/Organ Room?

The entrance to the Ebert Room is located between the shop and the Long Bar.

The Jerwood Studio is located at the far side of the back stage car park.

The Organ Room entrance is on the red side foyer level to the right of the steps leading down in front of the manor house. It is open two hours before the performance for visitors, and after the performance starts for latecomers to view the performance on a TV monitor, until they can be seated.

See Map of Glyndebourne for locations.

My friends are stuck in a traffic jam, will you be delaying the performance?

No. Unless we receive notification from the House Manager the performance will proceed as scheduled.

How do I become a Member (or where am I on the waiting list)?

It is not currently possible to become a Member of the Festival Waiting List.
Waiting List information from the Membership Department for an Associate Member.  Associate Members wishing to learn their position should contact Membership, as should those wishing to join the Mailing List.

What time do the gardens open?

The Gardens are open from 3pm (2pm on Sundays) before Festival performances. For Glyndebourne on Tour performances the gardens are open from two hours before curtain up. These are private gardens and are only for the use of ticket holders for the performance on the same day. We ask guests to respect the gardens and take litter home.

Can you recommend any hotels in the area?

See a list of where to stay under information or contact our Information Office who will be happy to provide you with a list of local hotels and Bed & Breakfasts. Email:  .

Where do I pick up my picnic?

The Picnic Collection Point is located next to the car park.  The collection point is clearly signposted near the single storey ‘Plashett’ building. See Map of Glyndebourne.

Can I reserve a picnic table on the Circle or Upper Circle terraces?

It is not possible to reserve a table.

There are a limited number of picnic tables available on the Upper Circle. In order to make this system as fair as possible patrons will not have access to this area before 3pm (2pm on Sundays) during the Festival. Before Tour performances this area will be open from two hours before curtain up.

Because of the limited availability of tables, in the likelihood of bad weather we would advise patrons to bring their own furniture.
