Schools' Matinees 2007 - 23rd March 2007

'The most imaginative opera-education department in the country.'
Michael Church, The Independent

This autumn, Glyndebourne on Tour will be giving matinee performances of Macbeth, L’elisir d’amore and Albert Herring especially for schools and colleges. This education initiative gives 3,500 students from across the south east the opportunity to enjoy professional opera. Glyndebourne is the only opera company outside London to present fully-staged opera performances exclusively for young people.

The Schools’ Matinee performances are an unrivalled opportunity for students to be introduced to opera, providing them with the chance to experience the excitement of watching a live performance in a world-class international opera house. It is the perfect accompaniment to a students’ exploration of music, literature and drama.

In support of the Schools’ Matinees, Glyndebourne Education is providing two workshops for teachers. These days are designed for music, drama and performing arts teachers and will be led by an experienced team of workshop leaders from Glyndebourne. It is an opportunity for teachers to develop an insight into the productions at Glyndebourne.

2007 marks the 21st year of Glyndebourne Education. Instigated in 1986 in response to the commissioning of Nigel Osborne’s The Electrification of the Soviet Union, Glyndebourne Education continues to maintain an enormous commitment to new opera and, in parallel to projects taking place in the community, has nurtured many commissions for the main stage and the Tour.  During the Tour, Glyndebourne Education also run outreach Opera Experience workshops for students which complement the Tour programme. Led by a team of artists from Glyndebourne, the workshops prepare students for the performance through various activities including physical and vocal warm-ups, drama work, musical listening exercises, singing and discussion.

Matinee tickets cost £6 per student. Teachers’ Packs for each opera will be downloadable from www.glyndebourne.com from 3 September.

The Glyndebourne matinees are supported by Arts Council England and Clore Duffield Foundation.

Glyndebourne on Tour runs from 9th October to 8th December 2007 and visits Glyndebourne, Woking, Milton Keynes, Norwich, Plymouth, Stoke-on-Trent and Sadler’s Wells.
