“I don’t think I have ever witnessed a more perfect realisation of a Wagner opera than this superb Tristan und Isolde.”
The Daily Telegraph
John Christie, Glyndebourne’s founder, had always dreamed of staging Wagner. In 2003 that dream was finally, triumphantly, fulfilled with this now-classic production of the composer’s ecstatic hymn to the all-consuming power of human love. Revived in 2007, it now returns for just seven performances. With Torsten Kerl and Anja Kampe – the powerfully impressive Florestan and Leonore of the 2006 Festival’s Fidelio – portraying the illicit lovers whose more than earthly passion can ultimately be consummated only in death, Nikolaus Lehnhoff’s intensely focused production is conducted for the first time by Glyndebourne’s Music Director, Vladimir Jurowski.
