Born in Romania, he studied Theatre Directing at the Bucharest Academy of Theatre and Film. His many awards include the 1995 Golden Globe Peter Brook Prize for Best Stage Director. He has also been appointed a Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in France, and a Commander of the Order of the Star of Romania. In Romania, he has worked as Stage Director for the Drama Theatre in Constanta, the Teatrul Mic in Bucharest, and the Craiova National Theatre. He taught stage directing at the Bucharest Academy of Theatre and Film, and was Artistic Director of the Bulandra Theatre in Bucharest. Most recently, he was Director of the Théâtre de l’Union at the Centre Dramatique National du Limousin in France.
In addition to many theatre productions, he has directed G (Pro Musica Festival in Bremen); La bohème (Essen); Roberto Devereux (Vienna Staatsoper); Parsifal (WNO, Scottish Opera); Satyagraha, Castor et Pollux, Eugene Onegin, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Lucia di Lammermoor (Bonn); Gianni Schicchi (Hungarian Theatre in Cluj, Romania). He has also directed productions at the Edinburgh and Avignon festivals, the Burgtheater in Vienna, and the RSC, among others.
