Born in the USA, he studied at the University of Illinois and was winner of the inaugural Beverly Sills Artists’ Award and the Pittsburgh Opera Renaissance Award.
His roles include Guglielmo/Così fan tutte, Marcello/La bohème (GFO); Moralès/Carmen, Papageno/Die Zauberflöte (the Met); Prince Andrey/War and Peace (Opéra National de Paris); Harlequin/Ariadne auf Naxos (ROH); Ramiro/L’Heure espagnole (La Monnaie); the title role in Billy Budd (Bayerische Staatsoper, San Francisco); Guglielmo (Chicago Lyric Opera, Santa Fe); Figaro/Il barbiere di Siviglia (San Francisco); Clyde Griffiths/An American Tragedy (premiere, the Met); Count Almaviva/Le nozze di Figaro (La Monnaie, Opéra National de Paris, Bayerische Staatsoper, Aix).
In December 2007, he sang the title role in Billy Budd (with the LSO under Harding, recorded for Virgin Classics); and he has appeared with orchestras throughout the USA and Europe. He is a Sony/BMG Masterworks recording artist, and his album Just Before Sunrise was released in August 2007. Future engagements include Les Pêcheures des perles (Chicago); Die Zauberflöte (Los Angeles).
