Born in Timisoara, Romania, he studied stage design at the Institute of Plastic Arts in Bucharest. Over the past 40 years he has designed stage sets and costumes for more than 200 operas and plays. A German resident since 1977, he is the recipient of many awards, including, most recently, the 2006 Hungarian Critics’ Award for best set and costume design and the 2007 UNITER Award for best stage design.
Opera credits include Lucia di Lammermoor, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Eugene Onegin, Castor et Pollux, Satyagraha (Bonn); Don Giovanni (Freiburg, Hagen); Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (Bremer); Turandot (Basel); Roberto Devereux (Vienna Staatsoper); Faust (Nuremberg); Der fliegende Holländer (Karlsruhe, Münster); Così fan tutte (Kaiserslautern); Die Dreigroschenoper (Vienna Volkstheater). Future engagements include stage design for Lulu (directed by Silvio Purcarete, Romania).
