Born in Britain, she was made a CBE in 1993.
Her roles include Florence Pike/Albert Herring, Kabanicha/Kát’a Kabanová, Mistress Quickly/Falstaff, Marcellina/Le nozze di Figaro, Countess/The Queen of Spades, Zita/Gianni Schicchi (GFO); Klytemnästra/Elektra, Mistress Quickly, Mrs Lovett/Sweeney Todd (ROH); Madame de Croissy/Dialogues des Carmélites (Chicago); Marquise de Berkenfield/La Fille du régiment, Mrs Sedley/Peter Grimes (the Met).
She has sung with orchestras including the BBC SO, ECO, LSO, RPO, Philharmonia, Concertgebouw, New York Philharmonic, Boston Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic. Recordings include Stravinsky’s Le Rossignol, Messiaen’s Poèmes pour Mi, Henze’s Phaedra, Britten’s Les Illuminatons (EMI). In addition to her concert and operatic work, she gives masterclasses in Europe and the USA. Future engagements include The Queen of Spades (the Met); Albert Herring (Opéra- Comique); Peter Grimes (ENO).
