French-born, he made his stage direction debut in 1980, his expansion into opera being comparatively recent and now an important area of his work. He is currently Director of the Théâtre National de Toulouse and was Director of Cargo: Centre Dramatique National des Alpes from 1997-2007.
Opera productions include L’elisir d’amore (Opéra National de Paris, ROH); La Fille du régiment (ROH, Vienna Staatsoper, the Met); La finta semplice (Theater an der Wien); The Love for Three Oranges (Netherlands Opera); Ariadne auf Naxos, Die sieben Todsünden (Opéra National de Paris); La Vie parisienne, La Voix humaine, Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, Les Contes d’Hoffmann (Lyon); Cendrillon (Santa Fe); Platée (Opéra National de Paris, Santa Fe); La Belle Hélène (Châtelet, Santa Fe, ENO).
