Currently Artistic Director of the  BOC, he was Glyndebourne’s Director of Productions from 1994-2000, where he directed Così fan tutte, Le nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, Eugene Onegin and Pelléas et Mélisande.

His recent productions include Otello and Macbeth (La Scala); Moses und Aaron, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (the Met); The Queen of Spades (Chicago Lyric Opera); Tannhäuser (San Francisco); Peter Grimes (Opéra National de Paris); Les Troyens (Munich, Florence); Rigoletto (Madrid); Tamerlano,  Idomeneo (Florence); Simon Boccanegra (Turin); Werther, Das Rheingold, Die Walküre (Lisbon); Die Zauberflöte (Salzburg, Moscow); Mefistofele (Amsterdam); Oedipe (Cagliari); Fidelio (BOC, also recorded for BBC TV); Candide, Ulisses Comes Home, Don Giovanni, La traviata (BOC). 

He has twice won the Premi Abbiati, and received the 1999 South Bank Show Award for Opera. He is a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and Honorary Professor of Music at Birmingham University.
