He trained at Central Saint Martin’s College of Art and Design in London. After periods as resident designer for the English Stage Company at the Royal Court Theatre and the Schauspielhaus in Zurich, he pursued a freelance career in Britain and abroad. He was also head of design and later associate designer at the NT.
Opera credits include Otello, Albert Herring, Simon Boccanegra, Porgy and Bess, La traviata, Falstaff, Peter Grimes, Le nozze di Figaro (GFO); Sir John in Love, Faust, Don Quixote, Mefistofeles (ENO); Der fliegende Holländer (St Petersburg, Baden Baden); Peter Grimes (Salzburg Festival); Roméo et Juliette, Don Carlos (Los Angeles). Theatre credits include Porgy and Bess, Epitaph for George Dillon, Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell, Guys and Dolls, Hamlet (2005 Olivier Award nomination). He works regularly with Peter Hall, Trevor Nunn and Richard Eyre.
