Born in Manchester, he studied at the RAM.

His roles include Rocco/Fidelio, Superintendent Budd, Immigration Officer/Flight (GFO); Prince Gremin/Eugene Onegin, Jeronimus/Maskarade, He-Ancient/The Midsummer Marriage, Publio/La clemenza di Tito (ROH); Balducci/Benvenuto Cellini, Dr Bartolo/Le nozze di Figaro, Hobson/Peter Grimes (Salzburg); Sarastro/Die Zauberflöte (Hamburg); Rocco (Seville); Commendatore/Don Giovanni (Santa Fe); Sarastro, Sparafucile/Rigoletto, Claudio/Agrippina and Ramfis/Aida (ENO). In concert, he has sung Les Noces (under Boulez with the Ensemble Intercontemporain); Messiah (under Bolton in Salzburg); St Matthew Passion (under Harding in Turin, under Pinnock in Vienna and Salzburg); Mozart’s Requiem (under Langrée at the Théâtre St-Denis in Paris).
