Born in Cornwall, he studied at the GSMD and the London Opera Centre. He received two Grammy Awards for his recordings of Peter Grimes and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in 1996 and 1998 respectively, and was nominated for an Olivier Award for his performance in the title role of Falstaff in 1997. He sings regularly in the world’s major houses including La Scala, the Met and Vienna.

He made his GFO debut in 1985 as Sid/Albert Herring, followed by Figaro/Le nozze di Figaro, Balstrode/Peter Grimes, Traveller/Death in Venice, Don Alfonso/Così fan tutte, Don Fernando/Fidelio, Doktor Falke/Die Fledermaus, Don Carlos/Betrothal in a Monastery. He has also sung Papageno/The Magic Flute, title roles in Doktor Faust, Falstaff, Rigoletto and Le nozze di Figaro, Don Carlo/Ernani, Figaro/The Barber of Seville, Balstrode, Giorgio Germont/La traviata (ENO), Mangus/The Knot Garden, Dr Falke/Die Fledermaus, Traveller, Sharpless/Madama Butterfly, Faninal/Der Rosenkavalier, Germont (ROH); Beckmesser/Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (Bayerische Saatsoper, Bayreuth, Amsterdam, Berlin, Chicago); Germont, Scarpia/Tosca (COC); Rigoletto (Philadelphia) the title role in The Pilgrim’s Progress (Sydney); Faninal (Vienna).
