Barrie Kosky, Australian theatre and opera director, delighted Festival and Tour audiences with his ‘landmark production’ (The Independent) of Saul in 2015, and it makes a welcome return to Glyndebourne in 2018.
The first of Handel’s great English oratorios, Saul melds operatic-style and psychologically probing arias with mighty choruses. Handel conceived this work on a grand scale, with an unusually large orchestra for the time and novel instrumental colours including a carillon, a solo harp, large timpani, extra woodwinds, trombones (rarely found in orchestras at that time), and a virtuosic organ part which he wrote for himself.
The 2018 cast includes: Markus Brück (Saul), Iestyn Davies (David), Allan Clayton (Jonathan), Karina Gauvin (Merab) and Anna Devin (Michal).
