Then Slowly Let Them Go

Transtion Project workshop

On Thursday 27 March nearly 200 Year 7 students from Tideway School and Peacehaven Community School, performed songs inspired by Britten’s opera Albert Herring at All Saints' Church in Hove. Over 300 people came to see the performance which included accompaniment from students of the Royal Academy of Music and musicians from Glyndebourne.

It was the culmination the long term Transition Project which traced the children's transition from primary to secondary school. The five-year project involved Glyndebourne Education working with students in six primary and two secondary schools in Newhaven and Peacehaven. Using Britten’s comic opera Albert Herring as the starting point for their creative work, the students have explored the themes in the opera surrounding the process of ‘change’ and ‘growing up’.

During their last term before moving into secondary school, the students in the 11 primary classes created songs with their teachers and artists from Glyndebourne. Over the summer the songs were shaped by the students into the larger piece entitled 'Then Slowly Let Them Go'.

The project, in collaboration with Creative Partnerships, Hastings and East Sussex, East Sussex County Music Service and the Centre for British Teachers, has strengthened ties with local communities and left a legacy of effective creative learning.
