Julian Philips is currently Glyndebourne’s composer-in-residence, where over three years he will be developing new opera and music theatre work, culminating in a staged piece for members of the Glyndebourne chorus in 2009. His first opera Dolffin (2006) was commissioned by Welsh National Opera for a national tour and next May is revived alongside his second WNO chamber opera, Wild Cat, at The Millennium Centre in Cardiff as part of their Land, Sea, Sky trilogy.
Julian’s extensive stage work includes both ballet and theatre scores: Les Liaisons Dangereuses, a full-length ballet (English National Ballet, Michael Corder, 2004), The Snow Queen, based on works by Prokofiev (English National Ballet/Corder, 2007) and most recently, an acclaimed score for Chris Luscombe’s Carry-On production of The Comedy of Errors at Shakespeare’s Globe, last summer. Future projects include incidental scores for A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Regents Park, 2007) and The Merry Wives of Windsor (Shakespeare’s Globe, 2008); he is currently in development with The Opera Group to create a new chamber opera for their residency at the Young Vic.
