Piers Burton-Page was on the staff of the BBC from 1971 to 2002, always on the radio side. During that time he worked mostly for Radio 3 as a producer and presenter, and was involved in the making of music programmes of all kinds, from concerts and operas to features, documentaries and interval talks. He first worked at Glyndebourne in the old house as a studio manager on a live broadcast; and from the new house he presented several live opera broadcasts. He also wrote the first biography of Sir Malcolm Arnold, Philharmonic Concerto (1994). Since going freelance he has divided his time between writing and reviewing, broadcasting and lecturing on musical subjects - particularly opera - and playing the cello very badly.
