The Magic Flute. photo: Mike Hoban
The Magic Flute is Mozart’s only opera written for the popular theatre and is his last completed opera. It is essentially an exotic fairytale incorporating mystical elements and symbolism, which allows Mozart’s creative genius full rein. His musical characterisation is always inspired, whether it be the earthly simplicity of Papageno, the dramatic brilliance of the Queen of the Night or the solemn nobility of Sarastro. This production is a vivid, colourful interpretation whilst enforcing the central theme of the work – the quest for love and enlightenment.
