Why Opera?
Opera is the perfect art form for students to encounter music, drama, movement, literature, performance, design and theatre crafts simultaneously – the result of which is exceptionally powerful.
Why Performances for Schools?
Glyndebourne’s Performances for Schools (part of Glyndebourne on Tour) introduce young people to opera from a worldclass opera house and give students the opportunity to interact with this multifaceted art form and experience the exhilaration of watching a live performance.
By staging full productions for students, we work to demystify the art form and to nurture new audiences to both opera and Glyndebourne. Performances for Schools also provide an ideal opportunity for teachers and academic institutions from the South East of England seeking to develop students’ exposure to the arts.
Who are these performances for?
- Don Giovanni is only suitable for students in Year 7 and above and those at colleges and universities.
- La Cenerentola is suitable for Year 4 and above, secondary schools, colleges and universities.
- Both performances are highly suitable for Music and Drama GCSE and ‘A’ level students, as well as students on Performing Arts courses required to review live theatre, demonstrate informed criticism and study musical styles.

About Glyndebourne
Glyndebourne Festival Opera began in 1934 when John Christie and his wife – opera singer Audrey Mildmay – staged a two-week festival of two Mozart operas in their home, Glyndebourne, in the Sussex countryside. Today the Festival is an internationally acclaimed summer season, featuring six productions every year staged in an award-winning 1200-seater opera house. Glyndebourne on Tour, founded in 1968, takes Glyndebourne productions to a wider audience, both at Glyndebourne itself and at five regional venues throughout the UK. Together the Festival and Tour reach over 140,000 people annually. Recently, Glyndebourne extended its activities with Glyndebourne on Screen, which sees its productions screened in cinemas throughout the UK and overseas, and the launch of its own CD and DVD label.
About Glyndebourne Education
‘The most imaginative opera-education department in the country’
Michael Church, The Independent
Glyndebourne Education’s remit has always been simple: to enhance the understanding and enjoyment of opera. The creativity, participation and learning programme for Glyndebourne works throughout the year to make Glyndebourne’s work accessible to a wider audience, aiming to get as diverse a group of people as possible to connect with opera, developing creative and dynamic relationships between artists and communities and contributing to the further development of opera as an art form.

Glyndebourne Education is offering a Workshop for Teachers to complement the 2010 Performances for Schools. This full day session is designed for music, drama and performing arts teachers and will demonstrate a range of practical and creative ways of introducing opera to secondary, sixth form and university students. The day’s content will include:
- Demonstrating how to prepare students for attending a performance
- Covering a range of skills suitable for practical work in the performing arts
- Introducing resources which support these skills
The workshop will be led by an experienced team of workshop leaders from Glyndebourne. Support material and other useful resources will be provided.
The teachers’ workshop will take place at Glyndebourne early in the Autumn term 2010. The date for this event will be confirmed before the summer holidays.
Workshops for Schools
Workshops for schools prepare young people for their first visit to opera. Each bespoke session provides an introduction to the opera and focuses on the musical style and themes through a combination of engaging practical activities. This year there will be very limited availability for workshops for schools.
- Workshops are 2½ hours
- Workshops are held in a local school – venue to be confirmed
- The date will be confirmed nearer the time, but workshops are held in the weeks before the performance.
Please refer to the booking form to register your interest for either of these events.
