Night Pieces

Over the past 74 years Glyndebourne has been the starting point for many of this country’s brightest talents. As a company, our musical standards benefit from this strong core, and as individuals many choristers can find further rewards in taking on small roles or understudying principal parts.

The introduction of the Jerwood Chorus Development Scheme in 2005 enabled us to find new ways of enhancing the skills of performers, as well as providing further opportunities for members of the Chorus to develop as soloists.

Taking the lead from, Eugene Onegin, this year we have devised a short programme based on the words of Alexander Pushkin. This has formed the basis for some vocal and operatic excerpts by Musorsgky, Rachmaninov and Britten, chosen from an extensive volume of music which was inspired by the great Russian poet.

Glyndebourne’s Chorus Master,Thomas Blunt, conducts soloists from this year’s Chorus as well as members of the London Philharmonic Orchestra. Ashley Dean, who has worked on a number of recent Glyndebourne productions, is the director.

We are greatly indebted to the Jerwood Charitable Foundation which has once again made these performances possible as well as funding a number of other initiatives throughout the Festival.
