Ghosts - July and October 2007

As a culmination of Julian Philip’s first year as Composer in Residence he wrote Ghosts, a site-specific promenade opera using three spaces at Glyndebourne: The Organ Room, The Old Green Room and The Ebert Room.

With a libretto by Simon Christmas, the work takes the Orpheus myth as its starting point. There are three characters: The operatic diva Eurydice (Katherine Moore), the composer Orpheus (Jonas Cradock) and the patron Hades (Anthony Cleverton). The piece spans three time periods.  In each the characters are different versions of themselves. The performers and three musicians (harpsichord, cello and clarinet) occupy the space together and the audience takes on a different role in each space. The audience are integral to the action and are moved to the next location by the music, players and characters.

The piece is directed by award winning director Olivia Fuchs. There was a week long development workshop on the project in July 2007 and the production had two performances on 26 and 27 October.

We are hoping to create a film of Ghosts for broadcast on this website and are looking for support for this project.
