The Fairy Queen OAE Project

Project Summary

This project was a collaboration between Glyndebourne education and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) and involved devising, composing and singing inspired by Purcell’s The Fairy Queen. It involves up to 120 9–11 year-olds from primary schools in East Sussex and London. The schools created a piece to share with each other following the understudy performance of The Fairy Queen.

The project comprised of a teacher training day with all the participating teachers, 2 workshop days in each school, a visit to Glyndebourne to watch the understudy showing of the 2009 Glyndebourne Festival production of Purcell’s The Fairy Queen and a sharing session of all the work created with the other schools. During the project the young people learnt some of Purcell’s original music, using ground based techniques to create their own compositions with drama, movement and storytelling.
