What you thought of Meistersinger

The Festival 2016 run of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg has now come to an end. It was a most welcome return for David McVicar’s production of Wagner’s opera about a guild of tradesmen dedicated to the art of mastersong, whose lives are turned upside down when a free-thinking young nobleman challenges their long-held traditions.

The original 2011 production will be available to watch in cinemas and online from 12 July, but now the Festival 2016 run has come to an end and Gerald Finley has shaved off his Hans Sachs sideburns, we take a look at how it was received.

In the press

★★★★ ‘There’s one compelling reason to see Glyndebourne’s revival of David McVicar’s cinematic 2011 Wagner staging, and that is the magnificent Gerald Finley as the Nuremberg shoesmith… I rank him as the finest Hans Sachs I have seen.’
—Richard Morrison, The Times

★★★★ ‘…with the London Philharmonic Orchestra playing with a smile on its collective face (a bouquet to its impeccable horn players), the music glowed with shining clarity and Schubertian freshness’
—Rupert Christiansen, The Telegraph
