Glyndebourne is celebrating a successful summer as the 2015 Glyndebourne Festival draws to a close today. The Festival, which ran from 21 May to 30 August, saw the following successes:

  • Box Office sales of 95% of financial capacity
  • The UK’s first professional staging of the rarely performed Donizetti opera Poliuto
  • A critically acclaimed Glyndebourne debut by Australian director Barrie Kosky who staged a hit production of Handel’s oratorio Saul
  • The extension of the Festival’s reach via broadcasts with Daily Telegraph, Picturehouse cinemas, BBC Radio 3 and Sky Arts in the UK and across Europe via the ARTE TV channel

David Pickard, General Director of Glyndebourne, said: ‘I am delighted that Glyndebourne’s 2015 Festival not only attracted great critical acclaim but also achieved 95% financial attendance at the box office. It is a tribute to our loyal audience that such a bold and ambitious programme should play to near capacity houses as well as reaching many thousands more through television, radio, cinema and online broadcasts.’

Looking ahead, the 2016 Glyndebourne Festival will present two operas based on Shakespeare plays to mark the 400th anniversary of the writer’s death; a new production of Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédict by Laurent Pelly and a revival of Peter Hall’s classic production of Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The events are part of the Shakespeare400 campaign, coordinated by King’s College London.

The rest of the line-up consists of a new production of Rossini’s Il barbiere di Siviglia by Annabel Arden and revivals of Wagner’s Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen and Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro.

Sixteen singers will make their Glyndebourne debuts next summer including German-Canadian tenor Michael Schade, French soprano Hélène Guilmette, Italian mezzo soprano Serena Malfi and Italian bass Carlo Lepore. There will be UK and Glyndebourne debuts from singers including US tenor David Portillo, German tenor Björn Bürger and South African soprano Golda Schultz.
