Glyndebourne’s CD release of its 2011 production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg has won the Opera category of the 2015 BBC Music Magazine Awards, it was announced last night.

The recording, on which the London Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Vladimir Jurowski, features a role debut by Gerald Finley as Hans Sachs. It topped a public vote to decide the category winner and was collected on stage by Anna Gabler, who performed the role of Eva in the production, at last night’s award ceremony held at Kings Place in London.

David Pickard, General Director of Glyndebourne, said: “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg is the most ambitious production we have ever staged at Glyndebourne , and capturing these live performances and then editing them into a single recording presented an additional challenge. The fantastic performances which are documented on the release more than justify that effort and we’re delighted that it has inspired enough appreciation among listeners for them to wish to vote for it – I’d like to thank everyone who took the trouble to do that.”

Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg was directed by David McVicar who has two productions appearing in the 2015 Glyndebourne Festival – a new production ofDie Entführung aus dem Serail and a revival of his 2002 production of Carmen.
