Families and culture lovers are being invited to take a peek behind-the-scenes at Glyndebourne for an activity-packed open-morning on Saturday, 11 October.

Glyndebourne will throw open the doors to backstage areas which are normally off limits including props, costume, wardrobe and wigs. A wealth of activities will give visitors an insight into what it really takes to make world-class opera come alive. Guests can enjoy stage makeup face painting, tread the famous Glyndebourne boards and discover the inner workings of the La traviata set up-close. Beyond the stage, visitors can get green fingered with Glyndebourne’s gardening team, and learn about the love-struck history of Sussex’s acclaimed opera house.

Children aged seven to ten and their families can also enjoy a new Glyndebourne opera “Songs About Us” . Three musicians will take the intrepid audience through eight gripping stories set to music by some of the world’s greatest songwriters. Choose to direct, sing and act with the performers or simply watch the mayhem unfold.

David Pickard, Glyndebourne’s General Director, said: “I’m delighted that we are once again able to give families the chance to get a glimpse of what goes on backstage at Glyndebourne and to meet some of the people who work here. This is a great opportunity for people who have never been here before to discover more about what we do, and for parents to introduce their children to the magical world of opera.”

The Family Morning runs from 10am to 3pm and costs £3. Songs About Us will be shown in the Ebert Room between 11am-midday and costs £7 for adults, £4 for children. Tickets for Songs About Us include access to the rest of the Family Morning.

Glyndebourne’s Family Day is kindly supported by The Chalk Cliff Trust through Glyndebourne’s New Generation Programme.
