Glyndebourne, in association with its catering partner Leith’s, has been awarded Two Stars by the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA).
The SRA rating is awarded to venues with an ongoing commitment to sustainability and recognises establishments that source food more sustainably, manage resources efficiently and work more closely with their community.
The award tops off a special year for Glyndebourne and Leith’s who are celebrating the 30 th anniversary of their partnership as well as 80 years of the Glyndebourne Festival.
As the official caterer for Glyndebourne since 1984, Leith’s oversee the Middle&Over Wallop, Nether Wallop and Mildmay restaurants as well as offering a picnic and porterage service. It is dedicated to championing regional produce and sustainable sourcing and many of its 270-strong catering team are recruited from the local East Sussex area. Menus are created to highlight British and local suppliers where possible and include Kentish asparagus and soft fruits, Harvey’s beer from the local brewery and Sussex wines – Nyetimber and Wiston.
Leith’s commitment to sustainability is shared by Glyndebourne which two years ago commissioned an onsite wind turbine from which to source renewable energy to fuel its activities helping it to achieve the prestigious 3* Industry Green rating.
Mark Linehan, Managing Director of the Sustainable Restaurant Association, said: “We are delighted to be able to crown Glyndebourne and Leith’s anniversary celebrations by awarding them a Two Star rating. This reflects the all-round excellent standard of sustainability in evidence. What better way to enhance a trip to the opera than enjoying a meal prepared using a selection of quality local produce, prepared with renewable energy provided by the turbine, safe in the knowledge that any profit is reinvested in the arts.”
Glyndebourne’s Executive Chairman, Gus Christie, said: “The importance of sustainability and corporate responsibility has been integral to Glyndebourne for several years. We are delighted to have been awarded the Sustainable Restaurant Association accreditation and this cements Glyndebourne and Leith’s dedication and commitment to sustainability, the environment and championing local suppliers.”
