The Gallery was opened in 2000 following the Archive's move to newly refurbished premises, and it provides the opportunity to display some of the prints, designs, photographs and artefacts housed in the Archive.
Summer 2008 opens with a new production of Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea, the latest in a long line of Baroque operas that have been presented at Glyndebourne. Although Glyndebourne’s ‘golden age’ of Baroque is generally thought of as the period covering Raymond Leppard’s pioneering work during the 1960s and early 1970s, the roots go back much further. For the first of its summer exhibitions, the Archive Gallery will be exploring that story.
Taking inspiration from the new production of Hansel und Gretel, the second exhibition will look at the theme of children and opera. All three generations of the Christie family have appeared on stage, and children have played a significant role in many of Glyndebourne’s key productions, quite apart from the many child specific events Glyndebourne has engineered over the years - including a performance of Hansel und Gretel in 1952!
