John Findon – Tenor
John Findon is on the opera course at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (GSMD). He began his vocal training with bass baritone Martin Bussey before studying at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD) with Kathleen McKellar Ferguson. In his first year at RSAMD John was involved in the World Premier of an updated version of Prokofiev’s opera War and Peace. He also took part in a performance of Peter Maxwell Davies’ semi-opera Taverner for the composer’s 80th birthday. In his final year he was cast in two roles in Monteverdi’s L’incoronazione di Poppea.
In 2013 John accepted a scholarship for the GSMD Masters Programme before joining the Opera Course. His performing experience at the Guildhall include operatic scenes: Tonio in La fille du régiment, Il Duca in Rigoletto, Monostatos in Die Zauberflöte, Prunier in La Rondine, Grimoaldo in Rodelinda, the title role in Idomeno, Don José in Carmen, and the title role in Peter Grimes. He also covered roles in Debussy’s L’enfant prodigue and took part in a live broadcast of Winterreise with Graham Johnson. In GSMD main stage productions he has performed the roles of John in The Cunning Peasant (Dvořák), Leandro in Le donne curiose (Wolf-Ferrari), Sir Huon in Oberon (Weber), Le Veilleur and Oskar in a Martinů double bill of Ariadne and Alexander Bis, Count Vaudemont in Iolanta, Vassili in Mavra (Stravinsky) and the role of Januarie in a new opera by Julian Philips, The Merchant’s Tale.
John has sung in many solo oratorio performances, throughout the UK and Europe, most notably: Messiah, Christmas Oratorio, The Creation, Mozart’s Requiem, St Nicholas, Dream of Gerontius and Puccini’s Messe di Gloria. He has also recorded the Liszt Funeral Odes for Delphion records.
John has sung in the chorus at Opera North covering the role of Lemmankainen in Jonathan Dove’s Swanhunter and in the Royal Opera House chorus for a production of L’Orfeo where he covered the roles of Apollo and Orfeo. He has also performed the role of Sir Philip in Owen Wingrave (British Youth Opera) and tenor soloist in Das Lied von der Erde in Valencia.
John is a member of the 2017 Glyndebourne Festival chorus taking part in La traviata, Hamlet, Don Pasquale, La clemenza di Tito and will also sing the role of Player 2 in Hamlet and Officer in Ariadne auf Naxos.
