Britten's Billy Budd

An historical insight into Britten's sea-bound opera, based on the tale by Herman Melville. This short film about the opera features information about the creative process from the librettist, Eric Crozier as well as an interview with the first man to sing the iconic title role of Billy, Theodor Uppman.

The 2010 Glyndebourne Festival production of Billy Budd will be the first in our history. It also marks the long-awaited opera debut for Michael Grandage - the acclaimed Artistic Director of the Donmar warehouse - who joins British conductor Mark Elder for this new Glyndebourne production opening in May 2010..

While their parents are out, Hänsel (Jennifer Holloway) and Gretel (Adriana Kučerová) are in no mood for household chores. Gretel tries to teach her brother to dance. Although reluctant at first, he joins in the fun until their revelry is interrupted by the arrival of their mother. She is clearly in a bad mood, and is not at all amused by their childish antics.

Hänsel (Jennifer Holloway) and Gretel (Adriana Kučerová) are woken up by the dew fairy (Malin Christensson). They have spent a cold night in the forest after they were sent out to pick berries by their mother. The children tell each other about their dreams of protecting angels visiting them during the night. To the children’s amazement, a magical building appears through the mist.

Giulio Cesare (Sarah Connolly) is introduced to a beautiful girl (Danielle de Niese) who claims to be a lady-in-waiting to Cleopatra. She asks for his help in defeating the man who has usurped her mistress, the tyranical Tolomeo. Cesare is clearly smitten by the girl and sings an aria in praise of her beguiling beauty. He little suspects that the girl is, in fact, Cleopatra herself.

He meets a young servant girl (Ruxandra Donose) by chance, and is immediately beguiled by her. The attraction is mutual, but when the handsome Prince asks her who she is, she gives a flustered account of her upbringing.
